Honduran Presidential Elections

Diego Arria in Honduras

Diego Arria in Honduras

Mr. Diego Arria, the editor of our Democracy in Venezuela Blog was among the international observers of the Honduran presidential elections on November 29, 2009. He met with the acting Honduran President, Mr. Roberto Micheletti. Mr. Arria has been an outspoken critic of the ousted president, Mr. Manuel Zelaya and his policies which Mr. Arria believes endangered the wellbeing and security of the region.

In the meantime, President Barack Obama declared that he would recognize the results of the democratic Honduran elections – a stunning but well-reasoned reversal of the previous policy formulated by Mrs. Hilary Clinton, who declared that the U.S. would disregard the election’s results and would recognize only Manuel Zelaya as the President of Honduras.
